Post-Operation Home Care
Fillings
When an anesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lip while you are numb.
It is normal to experience some hot, cold & pressure sensitivity after your dental filling appointment. Injection sites may also be sore. Ibuprofen (Motrin), Tylenol or aspirin (one tablet every 3-4 hours as needed for pain) work well to alleviate the tenderness. If pressure sensitivity persists beyond a few days or if the sensitivity to hot or cold increases, contact our office.
You may chew with your composite fillings as soon as the anesthetic completely wears off, since they are fully set when you leave the office.
Root Canal
Tenderness is normal after scaling and root planing. To reduce tenderness and promote healing, every two to three hours, rinse with warm salt water: 1/2 teaspoon salt in a 4 ounce glass of water.
Avoid brushing or flossing the treated area for 12 hours. However, after 12 hours it is very important that you continue to brush well. Please be careful brushing and use a toothbrush with soft bristles. You may moisten the brush with warm water if tissues are tender. Tylenol or Ibuprofen may be used as recommended for discomfort.
Highly nutritious food is necessary for the healing process. Avoid foods that require excessive chewing along with sticky, crunchy or coarse food.
Tooth sensitivity is normal and temporary. You may use a desensitizing toothpaste such as Sensodyne or any major brand for sensitivity relief. You may also gently massage the areas treated with your washed fingers. This will increase circulation and promote healing.
Lastly, please contact our office should you experience prolonged bleeding or any other problems during the healing process by calling (210) 899-5716.

I took my young grandson into the office to have a chipped tooth repaired. This was his first visit to this office. From the time we walked in we were warmly greeted by the representative at the front desk as well as the entire staff. Dr. Hasheem was extremely patient and compassionate. She took extra time to explain the procedure to him and keep him updated of his progress while he was sitting in the exam chair. The dental technician also took time to reassure him and check on his comfort. In a short time the procedure was completed and the result looked great! I highly recommend Shaenfield Family Dental as your primary dental office! Thank you Dr Shaheem and your entire staff!- Terry Murphy
