Signs You May Need a Filling

A cavity occurs when you have tooth decay, a common issue many people experience at least once in their lifetime. Additionally, the early stages of a cavity can be hard for the average person to detect and many people don’t experience obvious symptoms right away. The most common way to fix a cavity is to provide the patient with a filling. When you have a cavity, our experienced San Antonio dentist will remove the decayed portion of your tooth, clean the affected area, and then fill the cavity with one of a variety of common substances, such as composite resins or porcelain. The filling is then molded to match your natural tooth shape.

Symptoms of a cavity include:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Tooth pain
  • Pain when eating, drinking, or biting down
  • Holes or pits in your teeth
  • Brown, black, or white staining

It is important to have cavities filled promptly as an untreated cavity can lead to more serious issues like infection and permanent damage. Having a cavity filled not only removes the decayed material but also seals the tooth, preventing further damage.

Post-Filling Care and Recovery Tips

When an anesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lip while you are numb.

It is normal to experience some hot, cold & pressure sensitivity after your dental filling appointment. Injection sites may also be sore. Ibuprofen (Motrin), Tylenol, or aspirin (one tablet every 3-4 hours as needed for pain) work well to alleviate the tenderness. If pressure sensitivity persists beyond a few days or if the sensitivity to hot or cold increases, contact Shaenfield Family Dental.

You may chew with your composite fillings as soon as the anesthetic completely wears off, since they are fully set when you leave the office.

If your bite feels uneven, if you have persistent pain, or if you have any other questions or concerns, please call our office at (210) 899-5716.
